Trial of strength
Article Abstract:
Pound sterling has strengthened against other currencies from the European Union, and has been stable against the US dollar. Some Britons may fear joining the new European currency, which is seen as weak, but for exporters, a strong pound sterling creates problems since it affects their profits and their ability to retain markets. This has affected the growth of the British economy as a whole, and the trade deficit has risen. The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee is concerned that a high pound sterling may cut import prices to the extent that inflation is lower than the target set by the government.
