A sustainable house that sets an example: Bruges Tozer's Ecohome was the winning design in a competition for a sustainably built and maintained house
Article Abstract:
CREATE is Bristol City Council's new centre for sustainable development and its Ecohome was the winning design in a competition for a sustainably built and maintained house. It features a cube shape, recycle materials and natural ventilation. Air convection through the conservatory is encouraged in hot weather by a drop in the water level in the pond which leaves a gap under the conservatory glazing. Warm air from the kitchen is drawn up to heat the living room. Living room heating is via an underfloor system using low grade hot water from a condensing boiler. Externally the lower walls are cinder blockwork faced in recycled bricks, while the upper walls are clad in untreated cedar boarding.

Catering for every taste: Roger Stephenson has designed the catering outlets at Manchester airport to have distinct design identities
Article Abstract:
The new catering outlets in Terminal 2 at Manchester Airport were designed by Roger Stephenson's practice. The client, Scandinavian Air Systems, was keen to disguise the fact that each outlet was managed by one concessionaire, so different architects with the practice were assigned to each outlet. The globe bar is part of the cafeteria, evoking the atmosphere of a traditional English snug bar. The Riley Suite is an exclusive area with entrance only by invitation and features a dining room and lounge. The design aimed to suggest outside space, although there was no natural daylight.
