Meaningless ideas are still useful in politics
Article Abstract:
Lord Rogers is the UK's only full-time architect politician and he has a positive vision of cities, towns and urban areas, as compact mixed neighbourhoods, with public areas that encourage people to meet. However this is not necessary the universal panacea he believes it is. New Labour's enforcers have now said that the density of greenfield housing should be permitted to increase to 50 homes a hectare, and claim there is room for a million further homes in London, if on-street parking is reduced, brownfield sites are cleaned up and redundant buildings are converted into flats. However the city is only attractive to live in because of declining density.
