A way out, not a handout: aid group brings the poor to market
Article Abstract:
Maranatha Trust of Sydney, Australia and Opportunity International of Chicago, IL, are organizations that provide Asia's poor with financial assistance but with a rationale that sets them apart from narrowly focused organizations such as the World Bank. Opportunity/Maranatha, which organized a conference of like-minded groups in Thailand, advocates making credit available to the poor to enable them to establish their own small businesses. This approach imbues the poor with the entrepreneurial spirit and allows them to benefit from the wealth-creating power of capitalism.
