Looking into the future

The Japanese approach to product research and development is one that takes along time. At Nikon Corp, for example, Tatsuo Niwa developed a new product after more than 10 years, the electro-chromic smart glasses. The sunglasses areinstant versions of the usual photochromic glasses that became a hit in recent decades in that the lenses can turn darker or lighter much faster with just a touch. However, due to other innovations by other companies and unaffordable prices, the product fast becomes unmarketable. Niwa then has to think of further innovations on the product or apply the new technology on other products.

New dimensions for games
Article Abstract:
Technological developments in video-game machines were displayed at the Amusement Machines Show in Tokyo, Japan, Aug 26-28, 1993. Many of these innovations have passed the key test of success: acceptance by teenagers in video arcades. Capcom's Street Fighter game features individualized characters, while Sega Enterprise's Virtua Fighting heightens realism by shifting the viewpoint. This is achieved by using polygons, a technology also used in Namco of Japan's Ridge Racer game. Nintendo is planning a joint venture with Silicon Graphics using a 64-bit processor.
