A winning way
Article Abstract:
The winners of the 1992 AJ/Bovis Award for architecture have been announced. The first prize was awarded to Tomo Utsumi for his design for a pedestrian bridge at the Barbican Centre in London. The third prize was shared between Daryl Jackson's model of a folly and Gerard Maccreanor and Richard Lavington's reinterpretation of a traditional croft house.

Tadao Ando's Royal Gold Medal Address
Article Abstract:
The work of Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who received the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture on Jun 3, 1997, disproves the view that a minimalist approach produces dull art, according to Nicholas Serota, Ando's first sponsor. His buildings use a limited range of materials, but have great spatial complexity. They are particularly interesting for the tension which exists within them between sight and structure. He has become an extremely influential figure in contemporary architecture.
