Article Abstract:
Stock prices on the Tokyo Stock Exchange are rising, due in large part to Japan's policy of shoring up the market to help Japanese firms raise capital. Since Mar 1993, the Nikkei average has risen by more than one-sixth, despite Japanese firms' lower earnings reports.

Too clever by half
Article Abstract:
The Japanese economy has been bolstered by an $87 billion government support package. Stock prices have risen unrealistically but confidence in the hopeful upturn may be misplaced. The many bad bank debts is a crucial issue which the government must face.
