A woman's place
Article Abstract:
Christine Hawley was one of four women architects who responded to an invitation to design apartment blocks for a Japanese site. The four women had to design structures which would be a critique of the standard blocks already on the site and on many others in Japan. The blocks also had to reflect the female perspective. The architects did not know the site's location so, rather than designing to fit the site, they had to begin from a perspective of what would make good living accommodation. The first phase of Hawley's south-facing duplex blocks is proving popular with residents.

Contracting is facing a sea change
Article Abstract:
Contracting in the UK construction industry is set to undergo extensive changes. Contractors will have to decide whether to focus on expansion, competing for PFI schemes, and will have to treat sub-contractors much more fairly. The construction industry as a whole will not collapse, but the future of main contracting is now uncertain.
