SUGAR, SUGAR EVERYWHERE
Article Abstract:
India produced 128 lakh tonnes of sugar in the sugar season of 1997-98. It had a carry-over stock of 55 lakh tonnes. The sugar production for 1998-99 is estimated at 150 lakh tonnes. The supply of sugar is likely to be more than the demand in the next three years. The Government of India has allowed sugar imports with an import duty of 5 percent and countervailing duty of Rs850 per tonne. The domestic sugar mills will not be able to maintain profit margins as the price difference between domestic sugar and imported sugar is only Rs35-40 per tonne. This has put many sugar mills in difficulty and may make many of them unable to pay the sugarcane farmers. (rk)
