EPA DIRECTIVE TO AFFECT 5,000 INDUSTRIAL UNITS
Article Abstract:
The Environment Pollution (Control and Regulation) Authority (EPA) of the National Capital Region has asked the Delhi administration to close down industrial units which have not contributed financially to the setting up of common effluent treatment plants (CETPs). This directive is likely to affect 5,000 units. In 1997, supreme court had ordered setting up of 15 CETPs and 16 domestic sewage treatment plants (STPs) by 2000 AD to clean the filth entering Yamuna river. Till now, only few STPs have been set up while CEPTs are yet to come up. About 28 approved industrial areas in New Delhi produce about 320 mlillion litres per day (mld) of waste water, which flows directly into Yamuna without undergoing any water treatment. (um)(m)
