AP GOVT SETS UP ACADEMY OF CONSTRUCTION WITH PVT AID
Article Abstract:
A National Academy of Construction (NAC) has been set up the government of Andhra Pradesh in tie up with the construction industry. The self-financing academy will get 0.25 percent of the government billing of building contractors towards its corpus. The state government has allotted 167 acres of land for the academy free of cost. NAC will consist of five training schools. It will also organise the Construction Expo, a regular exhibition. The academy will be managed by nine state departments and associations of contractors and the construction industry. The academy will have Construction Workmen Training Institute, National Institute of Construction Management and Research, Contractors Development Institute, Construction Methods and Materials Research Institute, Institute of Architecture and Designs and Housing Development Institute. LOSSES OF PUBLIC SECTOR UNDERTAKINGS

There are 48 public sector undertakings under the administrative control of the Department of Heavy Industry, of which, 31 companies registered losses in 1997-98. The companies showed combined losses of Rs1241.35 crore in 1997-98. Out of the total losses, BSCL showed a loss of Rs88.78 crore, JESSOP Rs39.54 crore, HMT Rs29.14 crore, NPPC Rs7.60 crore and HCL Rs174.80 crore. (khr)
