AT&T Inc. has withdrawn its offer for a 33.3% stake in Olimpia S.A., the holding company of Telecom Italia S.p.A., raising questions regarding the influence the Italian government has exerted in attempting to keep the company under Italian ownership. Implications regarding the role of government in business deals are discussed.

Pirelli Chairman considers reducing Telecom Italia stake

Marco Tronchetti Provera, Chair of Pirelli & Company S.p.A., is thinking of selling Pirelli's controlling interest in Italy's largest telecommunications company, Telecom Italia S.p.A. Mr. Tronchetti Provera was forced to resign as Telecom Italia Chair in September, after a disagreement with the Italian government.
