AUSTRIA: BUNDESHEER'S FIGHTER OPTIONS
Article Abstract:
Reportedly only Saab-BAE and Lockheed-Martin have so far bid for the replacement of Austria's outdated Draken interceptor fighters. The Swedish-British consortium is offering the JAS 39 Gripen and the US company the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Austria's defence ministry is believed to be prepared to pay about Sch 20bn for 24 one-seat and 6 two-seat fighters. This makes the F-18 Hornet and Eurofighter's Typhoon too expensive. Dassault has reportedly so far submitted no bid for the Mirage-2000, and an order for the MiG-29 Fulcrum is said to be "not of interest". SAAB-BAE suggests that due to counter-purchases, the company's fighters would pay back within 15 years. For instance an aluminium foam developed by Alulight in Ranshofen could be used in the fighters. The material features good vibration properties and allows a reduction of weight.
