AUSTRIA: CHEMICALS INDUSTRY OPTIMISTIC
Article Abstract:
The industry association expects a 4% growth for the Austrian chemicals industry in year 2000. For 1999 the association reports an increase in production from Sch 103.7bn to Sch 107bn, boosted by the international economic recovery and the weakness of the euro. The industry's turnover increased 2.7% and exports 3.9% to more than Sch 89bn, while domestic sales stagnated. Growth was recorded in the sectors of organic chemicals, plant protection agents, pharmaceutical and chemical fibres, and declines in the fields of coatings, fertilisers, body-care products, cleaning agents, adhesives and inorganic chemicals. Plastics producers report a 13.6% increase in production and 4.6% growth in turnover. The number of chemicals companies in Austria fell from 371 to 354 and employment in the industry from 44,568 to 43,856 jobs in 1999.

AUSTRIA: CHEMICAL INDUSTRY EXPECTS SLOWER GROWTH
Article Abstract:
The Austrian chemical industry association expects the industry to see a deceleration of growth in 2001. In 2000 turnover grew 8% in real terms to Sch 123.1bn. Exports contributed 83% to sales. The industry benefited from favourable economic conditions in Europe and from the low rate of the euro, which boosted exports to the US and Asia. Especially producers of plastics and fertilisers benefited from US competitors' problems with high natural gas prices. In 2000 Austria's chemical imports amounted to Sch 124bn. The Austrian chemical industry comprises 354 companies with just under 43,000 staff.
