AUSTRIA: CLOTHING INDUSTRY IN 1999
Article Abstract:
In 1999 Austria's 270 or so clothing manufacturers saw a 4.7% increase in turnover to Sch 19bn. Exports grew 6.2% to Sch 16.7bn and contributed 87% to the total. Germany remained the main market, while exports to France surged 34% and made the country the second-biggest export market. Meanwhile, Austria's imports of clothing from Asia increased 7.7% to Sch 36.5bn. Deliveries from China grew 22.3%. Imports account for 94% of the Austrian market. In the past 20 years the number of specialist retail outlets for clothing in Austria has fallen by one-third to about 6,000, and a similar fall is expected in the future. Employment in the Austrian clothing industry declined 2% to about 10,660 people in 1999. The Austrian industry's east European plants employ about 15,000 people.

AUSTRIA: AMBITIOUS PLANS BY VOGELE
Article Abstract:
The Swiss clothing retailer Vogele aims to overtake C&A as Austria's second-largest clothing retailer in year 2001. H&M is the number one in the market that is worth about Sch 60bn per year. The market research institute Regioplan predicts the market to remain unchanged in the next few years. Vogele is to set up 12 new outlets in Austria in 2001 and raise the number of branches in Austria to 150 in the medium term, generating a turnover of Sch 4bn. In 2001 the Austrian company expects a turnover of Sch 2.9bn. In terms of selling space, Vogele is already Austria's leading clothing retailer, with a selling area of 73,800 sq.m. The new outlets are to be opened mainly in regional centres.
