AUSTRIA: COURT RULING TO CUT TRANSIT TRAFFIC
Article Abstract:
A ruling by the European Court of Justice could result in a reduction of the number of transit trips by trucks through Austria by 150,000 trips in 2001. Austria had challenged a decision by the European Commission to spread the reduction of transit trips, due to air pollution considerations, over a period of 4 years. The reduction of so-called eco-points and thus transit trips through Austria would affect especially Austrian operators, which have exceeded their quota considerably.

Article Abstract:
Following a ruling by the European Court of Justice, the European Commission has reduced by 1mn the number of so-called eco-points for transit traffic by trucks through Austria in 2001. Originally it had planned about 14mn eco-points for 2001. The number of transit trips will thus fall by 150,000 trips in 2001. Also in the second and third phases, the number of eco-points is to be cut by about 500,000 each.
