AUSTRIA: CUT-BACKS AT SEMPERIT
Article Abstract:
Austrian Semperit is to cut back tyre production. In year 2001 the subsidiary of Continental of Germany is to make about 3.3mn car tyres, while the original plan was 3.5mn units. The production will be closed for four weeks from mid-July 2001, and Semperit is to do away with a weekend shift. The move affects 20 to 25 staff. The production of lorry tyres is reduced from 840,000 to 730,000 units, and 350 staff are to be made redundant in summer 2001. Production in this sector is to be stopped for three weeks from mid-July 2001, and after that there will either be layoffs or two of the 5 shifts will be abolished. According to managing director Hans Hirschl, tyre production at the Traiskirchen factory is secured until at least 2002.

AUSTRIA: MORE CUTS AT SEMPERIT
Article Abstract:
Semperit Reifen AG, a subsidiary of German Continental, is to reduce the production of car tyres from 2mn to 1mn units in year 2002. This involves the loss of 130 jobs. Car tyre production at Semperit had already been halved in 1996. Wolfgang Holzbach of Continental said that no decision has been taken about closing the Traiskirchen plant altogether. However, he did not rule out such a decision within the next five years.
