AUSTRIA: DECLINE IN DRINK SALES IN RETAIL TRADE

AC Nielsen reports that in the 12 months to July 1999, the sales of drinks in Austria's retail trade (not including wine and not including Hofer) declined 0.6% to Sch 21.2bn. Sales of non-alcoholic drinks declined 0.6% in volume to 900mn litres. However, turnover increased 0.9% to Sch 8.7bn. The sales of carbonated soft drinks, which account for 39% of sales of non-alcoholic beverages, declined 3.6% in volume and 3.7% in value. Sales of mineral water declined 0.5% in volume but increased 0.8% in value. Turnover from fruit juice increased 6.2%. The sales of alcoholic drinks declined 1.3% to Sch 8.9bn. The sales of beer, which accounts for two-thirds of alcoholic beverage sales by the food retail trade, fell 2.7%.

Austria: Food safety regulatory body delayed
Article Abstract:
The launch of the Austrian food safety authority, a body comprised of the different departments that have responsibilities for food safety in the country which was to begin its work at the beginning of 2002, has been delayed, although it is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2002. The financing of the body has been confirmed. In addition to a yearly sum of Sch 780mn, the government will contribute Sch 200mn and the department for agriculture Sch 50mn, which health minister Herbert Haupt claimed was more than the existing amount for food safety.
