AUSTRIA: DEFENCE COUNCIL PRESSES FOR FIGHTER TENDER
Article Abstract:
Austria's national defence council, Landesverteidigungsrat, has urged defence minister Herbert Scheibner to invite legally binding tenders for the replacement of the Draken interceptor fighters. It is suggested that tenders should be invited in July 2001, and the decision on the aircraft type should be taken by mid-2002. Five manufacturers are to be invited to tender. According to Scheibner, two lots of 12 fighters each are to be bought, whereas the purchase of 6 training aircraft is not certain, as the training of the pilot might be cheaper in the country of origin of the fighters.

AUSTRIA: EUROFIGHTER TO BE CONSIDERED
Article Abstract:
Austria's defence ministry is said to be considering to invite Eurofighter to submit information on price, extent and time of delivery of the 30 new interceptor fighters that are to be bought for the defence force, the Bundesheer. Information has already been requested concerning the JAS Gripen of Sweden, the Mirage 2000 of France and the F-18 and F-16 of the US. The Russian MiG 29 is considered to have poor chances in view of the high running costs and the uncertain supply of spare parts. The contract will be worth no less than Sch 20bn.

AUSTRIA: SHORT-LIST FOR FIGHTER ORDER?
Article Abstract:
Austria's ministry of defence is said to have decided to invite only two manufacturers to bid for the 30 interceptor and training fighters to be bought for the Bundesheer. The short list is said to include the Gripen of Saab-British Aerospace and the F-16 of Lockheed Martin. The Swedish aircraft is said to have the best chances. The competing models F-18, Eurofighter and Mirage 2000 are said to be too expensive. According to defence minister Herbert Scheibner, tenders for the Sch 20bn to 30bn contract are to be invited before summer 2001.
