AUSTRIA: DEFICITS IN DEFENCE CAPABILITY
Article Abstract:
According to a report by an expert commission within the Austrian defence ministry, the country's defence force, the Bundesheer, will no longer be able to operate to the full extent from year 2003 unless defence spending is increased. The authors estimate that compared with countries such as Switzerland, Sweden and Finland, the Bundesheer has an investment deficit of Sch 150bn. With its present defence capability, Austria would not be able to ward off extensive military aggression. The capacity of the air force is described as "rudimentary". The report puts the annual cost of a professional army at Sch 53bn per year, while the defence ministry's budget in 2001/02 amounts to Sch 21.7bn.
