AUSTRIA: EFFICIENCY POTENTIAL IN WATER SUPPLY
Article Abstract:
A survey by the consultancy company Contrast estimates that a water supplier in Austria needs an area of at least 40,000 consumers in order to be able to be operate efficiently. Currently no more than 20 of Austria's 8,000 or so water supply enterprises meet this requirement. The 14 largest water suppliers cover about half of Austria's population between them. Investment efficiency of small operators is low, which is reflected in water prices. Contrast experts predict that in the medium to long term the number of water supply and sewerage companies in Austria might fall to less than 100 or even to 20-30. In autumn 2001 another consultancy company PriceWaterhouseCoopers is to present a study commissioned by the Min of Agriculture on the prospects of the Austrian water sector. In year 1999 Austria's drinking water companies employed about 2,500 staff and generated a turnover of EUR 567mn.
