AUSTRIA: ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY TO GO IT ALONE
Article Abstract:
The chairman of the industry association FEEI has announced that the Austrian electrical and electronics industry will no longer participate in multi-sector collective bargaining but instead negotiate directly with trade unions. Until now the electrical and electronics industry, which employs about 60,000 staff, was involved in collective talks for several industries with a total of 160,000 employees. The decision was prompted by the fact that no agreement was reached on a new performance-oriented pay structure. The electrical and electronics industry wants to depart from the principle of seniority as a basis for wage hikes.

Austria: Metal workers salary talks postponed
Article Abstract:
In Austria the metal workers' salary talks have been postponed until 22 October 2001. The talks have been particularly difficult in 2001 following the economic consequences of the attacks on the US on 11 September. While economic advisers are advocating caution, the representatives of the employees are trying to uphold spending power, claiming that the industry had an exceptional year in 2000.
