AUSTRIA: TOY SALES VIA SHOP TERMINALS
Article Abstract:
In April 2000 a new company called Playline.at is to start testing terminals at toy shops, through which clients can order initially 5,000 different items. The products are delivered to the client's home or can be picked up from the toy shop. The toy shops will get a commission for goods ordered via the terminals. Playline.at is to offer also a business-to-business platform for toy retailers. Playline.at was set up by Mr Peter Schmid, owner of Austria's second-biggest toy wholesaler Schneiders 1895 AG of Vienna. The company is to set up 300 terminals at toy shops by autumn 2000, investing Sch 50mn. Turnover is estimated at Sch 100mn in the first year and Sch 400mn-500mn annually in the medium term. Mr Schmid expects the investment to pay in the form of lower logistics, warehousing and transport costs. The terminals that cost Sch 100,000 are free of charge for the toy shops. The software was developed by the company YLine AG, which is to acquire a 20% stake in Playline.at.
