AUSTRIA: GROWTH TARGETS OF AMS

Austria Mikro Systeme AG (AMS) aims the double its turnover by 2004. In 2001 the sales of the company are budgeted to rise by 30%, while the world semiconductor market is forecast to grow by no more than 10%. In year 2000 AMS' turnover surged 38.7% to EUR 121.9mn. Earnings before interest and taxes amounted to EUR 7.4mn, compared with a loss of EUR 200,000 in the previous year. Profit on ordinary activities rose from less than EUR 1mn to EUR 7mn. AMS claims world market leadership in niche markets such as chips for electricity and gas meters and for weather balloons. At the beginning of 2002 AMS is to start up a EUR 305.2mn production plant in Unterpremstatten. The plant will make 8-inch wafers and double the company's production capacity. Currently more than 50% of production takes place at subcontractors.

AUSTRIA: CHEAPER CALLS WITH DUAL-SIM

In Austria, the Graz-based company Acotron is offering a Dual-SIM product for mobile phones, which allows users to switch between two operator networks by merely pushing a button, without having to change the SIM card. An adapter chip is inserted into the phone in the place of the SIM card. The product costs between EUR 86,48 and EUR 122,82 depending on the phone.
