AUSTRIA: DETAILS OF ACCIDENT TRAIN
Article Abstract:
At least 159 people lost their lives after fire broke out in a ground funicular in a tunnel in Kaprun on 11 November 2000. The two wagons of the Kitzsteinhorn ground funicular that had become operational in 1974 were replaced in 1994 by Swoboda. The company says that the bodies of the wagons are of inflammable aluminium, windows out of plexiglass and the wall and floor coverings out of flame resistant materials. The electrical and electronic systems are by Siemens. Swoboda says that as required by the Transport Ministry, train doors were designed so that they can be opened only by train attendants and from the outside.
