AUSTRIA: INVESTMENTS IN MOTORWAY LAY-BYS
Article Abstract:
Autobahn- und Schnellstra en-Finanzierungs-AG (Asfinag) is to make investments of Sch 1.5bn in motorway lab-bys throughout Austria in the next ten years. Rather than 342, there will be 100 lay-bys in future, but they will be 5 times as large as existing ones. There will be just one lay-by between two motorway service stations. The construction of a new lay-by costs up to Sch 22mn-25mn, while a conversion costs about half the amount. The first new ones will be available in summer 2001. Each lay-by will have a kiosk, which sells food, cigarettes and newspapers from 6 to 22 hours. Asfinag gets 4% of the turnover of the operator of each kiosk. The lay-bys will also have info screens and playgrounds.

At the shelves, the speaking trolleys inform the customers of special offers. For children, the shop has a video corner. Additional offers include surfing on the internet, free telephone calls and copying service, and blood pressure tests. A robot is responsible for cleaning the floors.
