AUSTRIA: MAX.MOBIL, GLOBALSTAR DEAL

Max.mobil of Austria is said to be the first European network operator to sign an agreement with Globalstar, allowing satellite telephony in Austria. Max.mobil charges Sch 33.44-50.16 per minute for the satellite calls. Meanwhile Universal Communication Platform AG (ucp.ag) of Linz has taken over the SMS.at short message service of Peterp@n, which, like Max.mobil, is a shareholder of ucp.ag. The young Linz-based company is betting on the convergence of internet and mobile telephony.

AUSTRIA: KEEN DEMAND FOR HANDS-FREE EQUIPMENT
Article Abstract:
The use of mobile phones without hands-free equipment was prohibited in Austria from 1 July 1999. As a result, the leading Austrian supplier of mobile phone accessories, MLine, sold 161,000 hands-free sets in July, and is expecting to sell about 1mn sets by the end of the year. Managing director Roland Hermann estimates that altogether 320,000 hands-free sets were sold in Austria in July 1999.
