AUSTRIA: MILK MARKET FIGURES
Article Abstract:
There are about 103 milk processing companies in Austria. In 1999 they handled 2.5mn tonnes of milk, up 3.7% from 1998. The steepest growth rate was recorded in long-life milk, at 14.5%. Since Austria joined the European Union, the share of long-life milk has doubled to 11%. UHT milk accounts for about 17% of production, and about half of the volume is exported. At the same time, the volume of fresh milk is declining slightly. Organic milk accounts for 9.5% of fresh milk output. Per capita consumption of milk in Austria is 212 kg per year, while the European Union average is 239 litres. 77 litres of the Austrian total is drinking milk, while annual per capita beer consumption is 114 litres. The production of Austria's cheese dairies in 1999 declined by 2.7%. However, the share of domestic products of the country's cheese consumption has risen to about 75%. Austrians' per capita consumption of yoghurt is rising, and now amounts to about 12 kg per year. The dairy sector generates an annual turnover of about Sch 20bn and is the second-biggest segment of agriculture in Austria after meat production.

AUSTRIA: STUDY OF ST. MICHAEL DAIRY PROJECT
Article Abstract:
The economics ministry of the Land of Styria urges Berglandmilch and Obersteirische Molkerei to look for a third partner for the dairy planned in St. Michael. This follows a feasibility study commissioned by the ministry on the Sch 700mn project. The study concludes that in order to be viable, the dairy would have to process 200mn litres of milk per year (into drinking milk and yoghurt), while the two partners could provide no more than 174mn litres. Berglandmilch wants Obersteirische Molkerei to take a decision about the St. Michael project by the end of April 2000. The Lower Austrian dairy NOM, which is seeking a merger with Berglandmilch, would make its dairy in Baden available to Berglandmilch.

AUSTRIA: BERGLANDMILCH/NOM TALK ABOUT FRESH MILK
Article Abstract:
Berglandmilch of Linz and NOM of Lower Austria are said to review cooperation plans by the end of the first quarter of year 2000. While both of the country's biggest two dairies would remain independent, they might cooperate in the field of fresh milk by setting up a joint venture. An alliance in the field of milk and yoghurt might yield savings of Sch 300mn to Sch 500mn per year. While NOM has a capacity surplus, Bergland lacks capacities. Berglandmilch expects unchanged sales of Sch 7.5bn for 1999. Profit on ordinary activities is likely to be down from the Sch 50mn of 1998. In 1998 NOM generated a turnover of Sch 2.7bn.
