AUSTRIA: MORE SHOPS AT FILLING STATIONS
Article Abstract:
In Austria, the three biggest fuel distributors OMV, Shell and BP are to open or expand 220 filling station shops in the next few years. Filling stations in Austria generate 40-50% of their turnover with operations other than fuel sales. OMV, which has 565 petrol stations and 126 Viva filling station shops, is to open another 75 new shops. Due to opening hour restrictions, the company is reserved about items other than convenience products. Shell supplies 350 petrol stations in Austria and runs about 80 filling station shops. A few months ago it launched drugstores at its petrol stations. If a test with textiles and computer hardware in Germany turns out to be successful, it will be introduced to Germany as well. BP is to cut back product assortment from 3,500 to 1,500-2,000 items and use the additional space for technical products such as computers and HiFi equipment. BP filling stations, like those of OMV, are already selling portable phones.
