AUSTRIA/N EUROPE: OPTIROC ARM TO WIENERBERGER

The big Austrian construction materials manufacturer Wienerberger has signed a letter of intent with Heidelberger Zement of Germany to take over the brick division of Optiroc Group AB at the beginning of 2001. The deal is worth EUR 60mn. The brick division employs 380 staff and generates an annual turnover of about EUR 54mn. It has face brick factories in Denmark (2), Sweden (2), Finland (2), and further production plants in Norway (1), Estonia (1) and Sweden. It is the market leader in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Estonia and number three in Denmark. Wienerberger is thus entering five new markets. The factory in Estonia is to be used for expansion to the Russian market. The trade company of Optiroc is to be used for expansion to the UK market. This company has been marketing the face bricks of Wienerberger's Terca subsidiary and of companies associated with Optiroc for some years.

GERMANY: WIENERBERGER BUYS MEGALITH

Wienerberger, the Austrian construction materials group, is to take over Germany's second-largest brick manufacturer, Megalith, on 1 July 2001 for EUR 47mn. With 9 production plants, Megalith generates an annual turnover of EUR 60mn and made a small loss in year 2000. Between them Wienerberger and Megalith hold 30% of the German market, of which Megalith accounts for 10%-points. Wienerberger is to close 1 or 2 Megalith factories and aims to raise prices by about 30% within two years. Production capacities in eastern Germany is to be adjusted to market demand. A closing of one of the 15 Wienerberger factories is not ruled out.

Austria: Wienerberger reports results
Article Abstract:
Austrian brick producer Wienerberger has reported its results for the first nine months of 2001. The company has recorded a 78% fall in profit to EUR 61mn and a turnover of EUR 1.18bn, 11% less than for the same period in 2000. Wienerberger expects to improve its results in 2002 following its EUR 90mn restructuring programme in Poland, Germany and the US. It aims to downsize its capacity to match demand.
