AUSTRIA: NEW ENGINES BY BOMBARDIER-ROTAX

Austrian Gunskirchen-based Bombardier-Rotax Gesellschaft m.b.H. has earmarked Sch 1.5bn for the development of new engines in the next five years. The subsidiary of Bombardier Inc. of Canada is thus doubling the spending. Beside further 2-stroke engines, Bombardier-Rotax is to develop 4-stroke engines for Bombardier Recreational Products such as snowmobiles, ski slope preparation vehicles, pleasure boats and all-purpose buggies. Key objects in the development of the engines is the reduction of emissions, noise and fuel consumption. Where the new engines will be produced will be decided in spring 2000. Series production is to start by the end of the year. In 1998 Bombardier-Rotax made a profit on ordinary activities of Sch 105mn. The entire Bombardier Recreational Products division made a loss of about Sch 411mn.

Austria: Baxter developing new vaccines
Article Abstract:
Austrian bio-technology firm Baxter is in the process of developing vaccines for Lyme disease, hepatitis A and influenza. The Lyme disease vaccine is still at the research phase. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection spread mainly, but not exclusively, by ticks, and there are an estimated 80,000 cases in Germany per year. The new influenza vaccine that is being developed is to be cultivated using mammal cells rather than chicken eggs, and the hepatitis A vaccine will also be cultivated using the same technology.
