AUSTRIA: SPAR CREATES SPAR GOURMET CONCEPT
Article Abstract:
Spar, the second-largest Austrian food retail chain, has created a new shop concept called Spar Gourmet. 36 outlets in Vienna are to pay special attention to delicatessen and specialities. Spar has taken over 76 Meinl outlets in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. The integration of the outlets into the Spar chain is to be completed by January 2001. Meinl Gourmet outlets are to continue under the name of Spar Gourmet. The product range is to remain almost unchanged but prices are to be reduced by 10-20%. Spar has to sell or close down another 17 Meinl outlets to avoid excessive concentration in the trade sector. Spar is expecting bids from Zielpunkt or Adeg.
