Recent research on the cycle of poverty is changing how liberal politicians such as Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton approach social policy. Research by William Julius Wilson, an advisor to Clinton who works from the University of Chicago, is discussed.

There was dancing in the streets of Haiti when Bill Clinton was elected, as many Haitians believe immigrating to the US will be much easier under his administration. Clinton may try to restore Haitian Pres Aristide to power so his people may not want to leave.

Against misplaced meanness

Clinton's efforts to change the welfare reform bill he signed into law in summer 1996 is not intended to undermine the reform as many believe. Rather, he is attempting to restore the cuts that are the most unfair and cruel.
