Article Abstract:
The death of Paraguayan vice-president, Luis Maria Aragana, was followed by the resignation of the president, Raul Cubas. Meanwhile, General Lino Oviedo, organizer of a failed coup, has fled to Argentina. The supporters of Argana have gained control and Senate president, Luis Gonzalez Macchi, has become president. There had been fear of a military coup, but the armed forces have backed Gonzalez. Gonzalez wishes to rule until 2003, while Cubas has fled to Brazil, seeking political asylum.
