Achieving quality
Article Abstract:
A 1992 Audit Commission report on development control in planning made several recommendations. The eight week target is seen as too crude, not allowing for workloads and sensible comparisons between authorities. Indicators such as customer satisfaction, listed sites and buildings saved and service are seen as more indicative of quality. Planning applications are lower than in the late 1980's, which increases opportunities for improved service.

Planning's forgotten purpose?
Article Abstract:
Town planners were sometimes accused of being bureaucractic and preventing expansion in the early 1980's. These allegations may have been stilled, but some commentators feel that poverty is the next issue to be tackled. Poverty includes not only material deprivation but also poor environmental levels and lack of public facilities.

Strategies country-style
Article Abstract:
Rural strategies are designed to enhance life for their communities while leaving the countryside as natural as possible for the remainder of the population to benefit. They are usually, though not always, written by local authorities. They can allow many groups to participate, including those who may disagree with the proposals.
