Adams alone
Article Abstract:
The peace process in Northern Ireland has encountered an obstacle over the issue of disarmament by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). Sinn Fein aims to join the new Northern Irish government, while Ulster Unionist head, Davd Trimble, refuses to agree to this unless the IRA agrees to surrender some arms. Sinn Fein leader, Gerry Adams, argues that he cannot force the IRA to agree, and that the peace agreement for Northern Ireland does not involve immediate decommissioning.

The Belfast marathon
Article Abstract:
Sinn Fein has offered disarmament of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) by May 2000, but the Ulster Unionists are not happy with the offer which involves a promise rather than actual disarmament. The unionists are also concerned about the relationship between IRA and Sinn Fein, and the extent to which the two are separate. The Irish and British governments are unlikely to abandon peace talks in Northern Ireland, and a stalemate is unlikely to be acceptable.

Sinn Fein comes on board
Article Abstract:
The Sinn Fein, the political arm of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), has signed an accord saying that the party would disavow violence. The value of this move was undermined by the IRA's claims that it might not abide by the agreement. British Prime Minister Tony Blair must work to keep talks going.
