Advisors appointed for Autostrade sale
Article Abstract:
Italy's state holding corporation IRI is working towards a number of sales. It has appointed advisers to work on the privatisation of the highway toll operator Autostrade and aims for the sale to be finalised by mid-1997. Other IRI activities included a sale by its Fintecna division of 49% of its construction company Italstrade, with an option for the further portion, to the Astaldi group. Fintecna's predecessor Iritecna, now in liquidation, is looking for parties interested in purchasing agricultural landowners Sogea and Forus as a joint package.

Italian privatisation efforts face delays
Article Abstract:
Privatisation, along with liberalisation and the creation of new markets, is a key element in Portuguese government policy. The government is particularly keen to use a successful privatisation programme as a way of improving Italy's reputation in international markets. However, some problems are currently being experienced with privatisations, especially in the banking industry. It has been necessary to delay acceptance of the BNL/INA offer for Banco di Napoli, and more than half of the Italian banking system is still under public ownership.

New bill urges faster bank sales
Article Abstract:
It is vital that Italy's public sector banks are privatised before the privatisation of operations such as electricity corporation ENEL and telecommunications concern Stet can go ahead, according to Italian Senator Franco Debenedetti. He has therefore presented a bill which calls for urgent measures to privatise the country's public sector banks. He sees this as a market-driven move which would encourage banking concentration will preserving the banks' local origins.
