German consumption of domestic appliances is declining. Retail sales fell in 1996 for the third year running, and the forecast is for a further 2% fall to DM19.3 billion in 1997. Traditional brown goods sales fell in 1996 for the fifth year in succession. Retail sales of brown goods totalled DM17.8 billion in 1996, which was a 7% decrease on 1995 figures. However, sales of computer and telecommunications equipment rose during 1996 and this increase looks set to continue.
