The main achievements of the European Commission in 1995 included the completion of legislation covering internal borders, confirmation of its committment to a single currency and preparation of new rules covering information technology. The Commission's priorities for 1996 include the completion of a legal structure for the single market, support for economic convergence and preparations for the countries of eastern and central Europe to join the European Union. An overview of the European Commission's current activity is presented.

The European Commission believes that the main priorities for the single market over the coming years should include energy and telecommunications liberalisation, social and environmental issues, equivalent legal standards in all member nations and biotechnology policy. An overview of developments in single market issues between November 1994 and January 1995 are presented.
