South African whites removed a major obstacle to non-racial democracy when they voted overwhelmingly to remove apartheid and work on a new constitution that would share power with blacks. Much work still needs to be done however, and the temptation to go for a quick fix must be overcome.

De Klerk stated that he will resign if South Africa's white voters indicate they do not support his democratic reforms in the upcoming referendum. Many whites are frightened by the increasing power and demands of the African National Congress, the leading black political organization.

Many South Africans, including some National Party officials, are preparing for life in a post-apartheid government. Prospects for the African National Congress, which has the most to gain from the expected changes, run from becoming the ruling party to becoming obsolete.
