Berlin's blues

Article Abstract:

Berlin, Germany, has seen a drop in office rents during the 1990s, and companies have left with the end of subsidies. Frankfurt tends to be the preferred German location for corporate headquarters. There are not enough direct flights to Berlin, and the city is also affected by bureaucracy, which can deter investors. Berlin has strong links with eastern Europe which could help attract investment. The city also aims to develop as a center for biotechnology and the media, and other new industries.

Article Abstract:

Sxony, Germany, is seeking to develop a new technology industry, with 410 technology companies setting up in and around Dresden, Saxony, as well as 2,000 of those companies' suppliers. Skilled engineers are cheap in Saxony, and will work long hours. The government of Saxony has also been seen as an incentive, since bureaucracy has been reduced, helping foreign companies to save time. Other German states would like to copy this example, but Saxony has a head start.
