Japan's huge electronics groups are in trouble, and many are unveiling large job cuts and restructuring plans. Japanese firms cannot compete with cheaper prices in the rest of Asia and better technology in the US.

The French government's mismanagement of the privatization of the defense and electronics giant Thomson can be explained as the last demonstration of power of a crumbling regime. France's leaders should encourage a change in French commerce because it is going to happen anyway.

The shrinking company
Article Abstract:
Philips has sold a number of businesses since Cor Boonstra took over as president, and the company aims to shed poorly performing businesses, while developing its stronger areas. The company has become more efficient and margins have benefited, but Philips' stock price is still affected by the company being a conglomerate. there are 80 businesses and eight divisions. Medical devices and lighting may appear to be peripheral activities, but they are profitable and have been retained.
