Airline mergers tread carefully
Article Abstract:
It is likely that a significant number of acquisitions and mergers will take place in the travel and leisure sectors in 2000. However, regulations limiting the foreign ownership of airlines will continue to act as a barrier to full-scale cross-border mergers between flagship national carriers. In the airline sector, the main focus of activity will be on further alliances, with the flagship national carriers playing leading roles and smaller airlines acting as junior partners. The 50-50 joint venture deal agreed between KLM and Alitalia in Nov 1999 is regarded as a model for the future.
