Airlines log on to skirt agents, forcing middlemen to diversity
Article Abstract:
Theoretically, since travel agents are being threatened by the Internet, the ticket wholesalers and consolidators should be going out of business. However, they are not disappearing in the Asian-Pacific region; rather, they are thriving, but concerned enough about the future to be diversifying. Airlines, which would rather not sale tickets directly, can use wholesalers and consolidators to market slow-selling seats at discounts without the added expense of advertising. The agent for this change is technology.
