Alas for time past
Article Abstract:
Matha's Vineyard, a 100 sq mile island off the coast of Massachusetts, expects to attract more than 100,000 visitors a day during the peak of the summer 1998 season. Visitors will include many celebrities, including President Bill Clinton and his family. There has also been a rise in the number of people moving permanently to Martha's Vineyard, with school enrolment having risen by more than a third since 1991. The influx of visitors has brought valuable income for tourist-related businesses, but has also brought negative developments, including overcrowding and crime.
