In retreat, Tchuruk now says Alcatel may sell 50 plants

Alcatel SA's chairman and chief executive officer Serge Tchuruk said that the company would sell 50 of its approximately 100 plants. Tchuruk changed his previous statement that Alcatel hoped to sell all but 12 of its plants by the end of 2002.

Importance of data networking for Alcatel grows, CEO stresses

Alcatel SA's chief executive officer, Serge Tchuruk, said that the company will post data-networking sales to carriers of one billion euros ($1.1 billion) in the year 2000. The company is also planning to purchase small network-software firms. Mr. Tchuruk made his comments at the CeBIT show in Hanover, Germany. He emphasized the importance of data networking. Mr. Tchuruk also mentioned that the firm was willing to consider downsizing additional noncore assets.
