Alcopa expects better results in 1998 on the ground of the high sales level in cars and motorbikes in Belgium. The holding company posted a turnover of BFr 21.9bn in 1997, from BFr 18.7bn the year before but the net profit fell to BFr 297mn from BFr 503mn. The operating result was stable to BFr 733mn in 97. The Belgian holding, which makes over 70% of its turnover in car and motorbike distribution, sold 23,000 cars in 1997 (21,500 in 1996) to a 4.5% market share and 46,000 motorbikes, 10,000 more than in 1996 which puts it in leading position in Belgium and second-largest actor in the Netherlands. Alcopa is also active in office supplies and furniture.

Sucraf (the Sucrerie and Raffinerie de l'Afrique Centrale), in which the Kronacker family holds a majority stake, posted a loss of BFr 2.7mn in 1997, compared with a loss of BFr 83.2mn in 1996. The company's principal asset is a 22.5% stake in the Kiliba sugar refinery in the Congo, where a sugar cane harvest may be launched in 1999. The directors, who met at the general meeting at Antwerp, have approved the renewal of director Hugues Kronacker's term.

Entreprises Jacques Delens (EJD) expects a slight rise in turnover in 1998 as a result of securing a number of huge projects in the first quarter of 1998 and of the better economic environment. In 1997, the Belgian construction company posted a turnover of BFr 1.9bn, down compared to BFr 2.2bn in 1996. In spite of strong pressures on margins and the uncertain economic context, the net profit fell slightly to BFr 39.7mn from FFr 40.4mn in 1996.
