Alenia, Aerospatiale may build 100-seat jet

Italy's Alenia SpA plans to build a 100-seat jet aircraft through ATR. ATR is the company's joint venture with France's Aerospatiale. The move will put ATR in competition with Boeing Co., which makes two 100-seaters and Airbus Industrie, which also plans to build a new 100-seat jetliner. Meanwhile, according to Domenico Ferreri, Alenia's deputy senior vice president for business development, the company is also committed to developing a 70-seat jet through ATR. ATR currently is developing two turboprop airplanes in the 40- and 70-seat range.

Eurofighter combat plane is rechristened Typhoon
Article Abstract:
Eurofighter gave the new name Typhoon to its $67-billion Eurofighter 2000 combat aircraft to pay homage to a ground attack fighter with the Royal Air Force that attacked German. The air forces of the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy are joined in the production of the fighter, which is being executed to carry out world-wide missions and conduct operations from short runways. Eurofighter managing director Brian Phillipson stated that the name fits the aircraft and the people flying it, and denied rumored objections from Germany.

Schroeder gives blessing to Italian-German merger
Article Abstract:
Gerhard Schroeder, the chancellor of Germany, stated his support for the proposed merger between Deutsche Telekom AG and Telecom Italia SpA. The proposed deal is valued at $76 billion. Mr. Schroeder made his support for the deal public following talks with Italian Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema in Bari, Italy. The Italian government has not commented on the proposed deal. The German government has been supporting the deal.
