All at sea
Article Abstract:
The shipping industry faces a drop in demand in Asia, a Japanese recession, and a possible slowdown in the US economy. Exports from Asia have risen in volume terms, but there is concern that there mnay be a slowdown after Christmas. Ships also face problems in loading cargo for their return to Asia. There is overcapacity in dry bulk freight, and ship prices have fallen. Bank lenders have found that ships have dropped in value to less than loans. Some shipping companies are concerned with market share rather than profits and are placing orders for new ships.

Article Abstract:
The shipbuilding industry in Gdansk, Poland, became well-known with the rise of the Solidarity labor union. The shipyard at Gdansk may have to close, while another shipyard at Szczecin has become profitable by specialising and has repaid much of its bank debt. Gdansk has suffered both from a shortage of working capital and from low productivity, since working practices were not reformed. Gdansk has failed to invest in new equipment and has lost many skilled workers.
