All change in Croatia
Article Abstract:
Elections in Croatia in Jan 2000 have led to the defeat of the nationalist ruling party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), and a new government is likely to be set up by the Social Liberals and Social Democrats. A new coalition government would face a number of challenges, such as reducing unemployment, at 20%, and dealing with Croatia's recession. A presidential election is scheduled for Jan 24 2000, and the HDZ has selected Mate Granic as a candidate. This is a move away from isolationism and nationalism, whoever wins the election.

Slow change for Mexico
Article Abstract:
Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) is holding primaries to select a presidential candidate, and this is a positive move, but there is a need for further reform to promote democracy. Francisco Labastida has won the first national primary. He appears to be a suitable candidate to bring together the traditionalist and technocratic wings of the PRI. There are still blurred boundaries between ruling party, state and nation, and there is a need for institutional cleansing to promote democracy.
